Squares, Cubes, and Their Roots

Some numbers are formed by multiplying a number by itself one or more times. These are described using the terms square, square root, cube, and cube root.

A square is the result of multiplying a number by itself.
$$
5^2 = 5 \times 5 = 25
$$

A square root is the number that multiplies by itself to give a given value.
$$
\sqrt{25} = 5
$$

A cube is the result of multiplying a number by itself three times.
$$
3^3 = 3 \times 3 \times 3 = 27
$$

A cube root is the number that multiplies by itself three times to give a given value.
$$
\sqrt[3]{27} = 3
$$

You should be able to recognise square and cube numbers and find square roots and cube roots of simple values accurately.
