Converting Numbers From One Form Into Another
Numbers are often written as fractions, decimals, or percentages. Converting between these forms allows you to compare values easily and solve problems in exams and real-life situations.
To convert a fraction to a decimal, divide the numerator by the denominator.
$$
\frac{3}{5} = 0.6
$$
To convert a decimal to a fraction, write the decimal as a fraction using place value, then simplify.
$$
0.4 = \frac{4}{10} = \frac{2}{5}
$$
To convert a decimal to a percentage, multiply by \(100\).
$$
0.38 = 38\%
$$
To convert a percentage to a decimal, divide by \(100\).
$$
7\% = 0.07
$$
To convert a percentage to a fraction, write the percentage over \(100\) and simplify if possible.
$$
45\% = \frac{45}{100} = \frac{9}{20}
$$
To convert a fraction directly to a percentage, first convert it to a decimal, then multiply by \(100\).
$$
\frac{1}{8} = 0.125 = 12.5\%
$$
Always simplify fractions where possible, and check your answer makes sense. For example, values less than \(1\) represent less than a whole, and percentages greater than \(100%\) represent more than one whole.
