Equivalences Between Fractions, Decimals and Percentages

Fractions, decimals and percentages are different ways of representing the same value. Being able to convert between them helps you compare numbers, solve problems, and interpret real-life information such as discounts and probabilities.

fraction shows a part of a whole. A decimal is another way of writing the same value using place value. A percentage means “out of 100”.

To convert a fraction to a decimal, divide the numerator by the denominator.

$$
\frac{3}{4} = 0.75
$$

To convert a decimal to a percentage, multiply by \(100\).

$$
0.75 = 75\%
$$

To convert a percentage to a decimal, divide by \(100\).

$$
18\% = 0.18
$$

To convert a percentage to a fraction, write it over \(100\) and simplify if possible.

$$
25\% = \frac{25}{100} = \frac{1}{4}
$$

Some values are especially important to recognise because they appear often. These are called common equivalences.

$$
\frac{1}{2} = 0.5 = 50\%
$$

$$
\frac{1}{4} = 0.25 = 25\%
$$

$$
\frac{3}{4} = 0.75 = 75\%
$$

Always check your final value makes sense by estimating. For example, any percentage greater than \(100%\) represents a value greater than one whole, and any decimal less than \(1\) represents less than a whole.
